About The Society
The Golf Society was founded in 1992 following a golfing day trip to Portpatrick GC in Scotland. On the way back, following a few refreshments, it was decided to form a golf society which would initially play a few outings during the year. George Anderson played a very large part in forming the Society and became the first Captain in September 1992. The success of George’s first year was the spring board the society needed to go further and develop. George presented the Captain’s Trophy which was first played for at Wigtownshire Golf Club in Scotland during the inaugural Captain’s Weekend in 1993.
In 1994 during a very famous Captain Weekend to Westport, the committee decided to nominate George Anderson as President of the Society. By a unanimous vote by the members, George was elected President and has remained our President ever since.
The crest was designed by Robert McGorman, a well known figure from Comber. It is made up of an olive branch for peace, crossed golf clubs and a ship which Rollo Gillespie, one of the most famous Combertonians of all time, was supposed to have sailed into battle aboard.
Our motto is Conare Perseverare which means Endeavour to Persevere. Trevor Geddis, our Treasurer came up with the motto following a flash of inspiration!
McBride’s is a Bar and Restaurant in Comber, County Down, Northern Ireland. It is located in a very scenic part of County Down at the north end of Strangford Lough and under the shadow of Scrabo Tower.
If you are ever travelling through this part of the world, why not take the time to drop into the bar and restaurant where you will find good food and quality beer. The downstairs bar also holds some the memorabilia of the Golf Society.
